«Lowline Lab» in the USA, New York
The “Lowline” project is the first underground park in the world and was built at a historic location in New York (USA). This is the former Williamsburg Bridge Trolley Terminal, directly under Delancey Street at the southern end of Manhattan, with an area of more than 4,000 square meters.
The “Lowline” project is a new type of public park in which historical elements of a former trolley terminal are combined with state-of-the-art solar technology and design. It will allow the growth of plants and trees on an underground level. For the implementation of this project, the research laboratory “Lowline Lab” was initially set up, where visions of new solar technology and design could be experimented with.
Seoul Jonggak Underground Park in South Korea, Seoul
Another underground park in the South Korean capital Seoul was developed in cooperation with Lumena. In the Jonggak Underground Shopping Center, a park with natural daylight was opened, creating a more pleasant shopping atmosphere.
The project is the first major pilot facility in Seoul to provide sunlight to an underground park. The parabolic mirrors concentrate the sunlight and reflect it backwards through the centre of the mirror, through the hollow gears and through the columns on which the mirrors are mounted. In the underground it is guided via hollow light guides and corrective lenses to the corresponding natural light lamps. Lumena was involved in the development and supplied the corresponding software for tracking the parabolic mirrors.
